It all started in 1987 when Rick Huffmann was receiving specialized defensive firearm training while attending an executive protection academy in Colorado. During the extensive on-the-range firearm exercises Rick was briefly introduced to a new concept of engaging in several scenarios while using simulated weapons launching marking projectiles (very early CO2 paintball guns). The real surprise was that most, specially the law enforcement personal attending, all whom had performed skillfully during live-fire exercises had failed even the basics when faced with a live adversary. Rick quickly realized "reality with confirmation" was the key to successful training.
The same year Rick created the first prototype of a portable range facility representing an urban environment. He also created his own modified CO2 weapons and basic PPE (personal protection equipment). Rick for the next several years traveled and trained using his system while working various protection details throughout the country.
Encouraged by professionals within his sector, Rick decided to found PDT (practical defense training) Technologies in June of 1991 in Northern California. Rick dedicated his products and his branded P.R.O. (progressive realistic operations) training application to the law enforcement and military sector only. Rick received his first patent for his portable range facility in 1993. Rick continued his advancement in RBT (reality based training) by designing a complete comprehensive system consisting of: portable ranges, PPE, targetry, and related training accessories, all pertaining to the use of NLTA (non-lethal training ammunition). Rick, not satisfied with the current NLTA available, created his own and was awarded his next two patents for both the cartridge and marking bullet in 2006. (ATK/Federal Cartridge currently own the rights and are producing this cartridge under their Force-on-Force brand).
Rick was often asked to work as an consultant with various training agencies, and state agencies like California P.O.S.T. and federal centers like F.L.E.T.C. during late 1900's and into the early 2000's.
Rick is responsible for creating terminology distinctions in use today such as; "RBT" (reality based training), "Condition Blue" (non-lethal weapon status), "Condition Black" (lethal weapon status), "L.T.'s" (live-target), and "I.T.'s) (inanimate-target).
Company trademark quotes; "Realism exceeds all", "Skills learned. Theories confirmed!", and "Train safe, Train real!".
Rick continues his dedication in providing safe, practical and diversified products and training in the professional, law enforcement and military arena.
